The first task day of the year took place on 12 January 2022. Ranger Matt joined volunteers Dave, Brian, Glenys, Mal and Emma on a bright winter morning with clear views across the estuary.
The team began work on two new Friends of Hilbre information boards sponsored by the Burbo Bank consortium. They measured for a frame in the Slate Shed and positioned the second board in the Telegraph Station.
After a long period of closure, the Telegraph Station needed a spring clean. Volunteers removed rubbish and old posters, brought in a replacement table from the Buoy Master’s House and noted further work for a future visit.
Brambles were cleared behind the main room and toilet area to improve access to the lower path, while leaving enough cover for potential nesting birds. Work also continued on the stone wall along the island’s western cliff edge.
The composting toilets and their metal supports were inspected, loose sections of railing were collected and stored safely, and the day’s observations were added to the next task list. Visitors were also welcomed and told about the Friends and the forthcoming Open Day.
