Hilbre’s buildings record the practical work of signalling, rescue, navigation and island life. Access varies and is usually limited to selected events.
Telegraph Station
A distinctive island lookout
The glazed lookout is one of Hilbre’s most recognisable structures. It reflects the island’s long association with communication and observation across the estuary.
Lifeboat heritage
Rescue history on the western shore
The old Lifeboat Station and slipway connect Hilbre with the history of rescue in the estuary. Building opening is event-dependent and should never be assumed.
Care and restoration
Practical work in a harsh environment
Salt, wind and rain make maintenance demanding. Friends of Hilbre volunteers support the care and interpretation of the buildings alongside the organisations responsible for them.
